Exterior Construction:
To withstand the climatic conditions associated with exterior applications, we incorporate several features to ensure long-lasting durability.

  • Wider and thicker stiles to provide an additional bearing surface for hardware.
  • Two-layer “floating” panels to permit inner and outer panels to expand and contract independently having a total panel thickness of 1-1/2 inches on raised panel doors, and 1-1/4 inch thick on mission doors.
  • Glue specifically formulated for outdoor applications.
  • A unique high-quality V-shaped compression type weather-strip that is pressed into a groove that is machined into the jamb boards.

About Our Photographs

When you click on one of the line drawings to the right, you will see large pictures of unfinished doors that were pulled directly from our production line to give you an idea of how our doors look. Please remember that since wood is a natural product, variations in color, grain, and texture will occur. Regardless of the type of wood shown in a particular design picture, all designs are available in all species of wood that we sell.

Not all doors have color photographs at the present time, but they are being added as they become available.

Profile and Other Options

(Click on any image for a larger rendering)

Raised panel wood doors manufactured by Allegheny Wood Works are available as Interior Doors and Exterior Front Entry Doors and are available in all door designs.

Raised panel doors are an example of frame and panel construction, a method developed hundreds of years ago to combat the effects of moisture on solid wood used in wood doors, cabinetry and furniture making.

In a raised panel door, a large panel is fitted into a groove in the interior edge of a more dimensionally stable frame. The panel is sized slightly smaller than the actual dimension that the grooved frame will accommodate and simply rests in the groove without being physically attached to the frame.

Since the panel is given a little “room to move” and isn’t physically attached to the frame, it is free to expand and contract with seasonal changes in humidity without affecting the stable shape and size of the frame.

For raised panel doors select either P1-cove (our standard) or P2-slant for the panel profile. Also select either M1-ogee (our standard) or M2-rounded for the molding profile. These profiles can be interchanged to your choice.
For mission doors select P3-flat for the panel profile (3/4″ thick flat panel) and M3-square edge for the molding profile.

For a 1-3/8″ thick door, the only way to have a flat panel with molded profiles M1 or M2 is to use 1/4″ thick plywood as the panel material. For a 1-3/4″ thick door, with profiles M1 or M2 we can use 1/2″ thick solid wood panels. This is often required when doing restoration work and replicating doors from the early 1900’s.

Flat Panel Wood Doors manufactured by Allegheny Wood Works are available as Interior Doors and Exterior Front Entry Doors.

Flat Panel Doors, also known as Mission or Arts and Crafts style, are an example of frame and panel construction, a method developed hundreds of years ago to combat the effects of moisture on solid wood used indoors, cabinetry and furniture making.

In a flat panel door, a large panel is fitted into a groove in the interior edge of a more dimensionally stable frame.

K-Brace Solid Wood Door Design

K-Brace Doors add a unique and rustic look to any home. A K-Brace may be added to the AWW220 Mission Style Flat Panel interior door. The brace is applied over the existing panels.

K-Braces are not installed on Bi-Fold doors.

Braces are installed on full-size doors 22-inches wide and larger.

V-Groove Solid Wood Door Design

Our V-Groove doors can be made in any door design.

V-Groove doors are made to simulate a planked look on either mission flat panel doors or raised panel doors.

Our standard distance between v-grooves is 3 or 4 inches. V-grooves start in the center of the panel, and repeat until we reach the edge of the wood.

Solid Wood Louvers

Solid wood Louver Doors are available in sizes to fit Flat Panel Mission Style door panel openings (except arch top designs). Louvered Doors are available with either framed louvers or flush louvers.

Framed louvers are “clamped” into the door after it is built utilizing an Applied Molding. These are typically used to match a raised panel decor.

Flush louvers are installed directly into the doors as it is built and are used to match a mission (Craftsmen, Arts and Crafts) decor.

Louvers can be installed in place of any panel on any of our solid wood door designs except arched panels. Some species material may not be available.

Applied Molding Designs

Dutch Door Designs

Dutch Doors manufactured by Allegheny Wood Works are available as Interior Doors and Exterior Front Entry Doors.

A Dutch Door is a door divided horizontally in such a fashion that the bottom half may remain shut while the top half opens. The initial purpose of this door was to keep animals out of farmhouses while allowing light and air to filter through the open top.

Later modifications included doors where both halves can be closed or opened together. Dutch Doors are available in any wood door design that has a Lock Rail.

Solid Wood Flush Doors

Solid wood flush doors manufactured by Allegheny Wood Works are available as interior doors or exterior front entry doors. Don’t settle for solid “core” when you can get true solid wood flush doors.

Flush doors are simple interior and exterior doors that feature a plain flat face on both sides.

The flush door is more closely associated with function rather than style, however, this plain sort of door lends itself well to a number of room designs where the desire is to highlight other elements in the space.

While the flush door is usually considered to be more utilitarian than other types of doors, that does not mean the door cannot be an attractive element in the room design.

Flush doors are typically associated with contemporary decor. A door of this type an also be a means of picking up a secondary color in the fabrics used in the space, helping to draw that color out into the general look of the room.

Engraved & Carved Designs

Allegheny Wood Works offers both laser engraved wood doors and CNC router carved wood doors. In addition to standard artwork designs (shown below), we also offer custom artwork and designs. Custom art can be company logos, scenic pictures, portraits, names, geometric designs, etc. Our graphic artists will work with you to put your favorite picture, drawing, or design on our wood doors (subject to copyright restrictions). Since each carving is individually made, some variations in texture and shading will occur, creating unique pieces.

These engraving and carving options are available for both interior and exterior doors. Large engravings and carvings are designed for the large panel in the upper portion of a door such as AWW220 or AWW210. However, we can also engrave or carve smaller designs into small panels, into the lock rail (middle horizontal rail on a door), or in corners of doors. You are not limited to just a couple of wood species or predetermined door sizes. Since we manufacture the doors and also do the engraving and carving, your door can be made using any species of wood that we carry, in any door design that we make, and in any size.
