Solid Oak Interior Door Buying Guide
Allegheny Wood Works is a wood door supplier that manufactures custom solid wood doors. Our manufacturing takes modern, state of the art technology, and a deep appreciation and understanding of the craftsmanship and classic beauty of the past, and combines them into durable, beautiful, high-quality interior wood doors. We offer a multitude of wood species, but one of our most popular is solid oak. In this comprehensive buying guide, we will go into detail and discuss the many factors that go into choosing the best solid oak interior doors, including the types, styles, and pricing. Follow the steps below to find the right solid oak interior doors for your home.
Step 1: Choose Your Oak Type
The first step in the process is choosing the right type of oak. We offer Red and White Oaks, as well as Rustic and Quartersawn selections of both. Rift Sawn oak is available upon request.
Red Oak
Red oak is one of the most widely used hardwoods in North America, found in everything from hardwood flooring to high end furniture. It is typically straight-grained, with heartwood that runs from a light tan to pink with a reddish tinge. It also stains very well and can be finished to match any décor. Altogether, a red oak door can offer a rich, elegant look to any room in your home. View the photo below to see what unfinished red oak doors look like.
White Oak
White oak is commonly used in everything from ship timbers and barrels to furniture and flooring. It is also widely used in both interior and exterior doors. Its color ranges from light tan to pale or dark brown, with whitish to light brown sapwood. Its resistance to water and overall stability, along with the fact that it finishes beautifully, make it a great choice for both interior and exterior doors. Rustic Oak (Red or White)
Rustic oak (red or white) is the same high quality lumber as clear oak, except that all knots, color variations and streaks are left in the finished product. This provides a more rustic appearance as compared to its standard counterpart. Stain and varnish accent these characteristics very well. Step 2: Choose Your Panel Profile
After you’ve chosen your type of oak and stain, the next step is to choose your panel profile. Red oak, white oak, and rustic oak doors are all available in raised panel or flat panel mission style. Flat panel doors offer a more minimalist and sleek look, while raised panel doors offer a fuller, more classic look, while also offering a bit more durability. Both raised and flat panel oak interior doors can add elegance and style to any home, so it’s just a matter of preference and finding out which style best matches your home décor.
Step 3: Choose Your Stain
Once you’ve chosen your type of oak, the next step is to choose your stain. Allegheny Wood Works offers factory finishing using Sherwin Williams stains. Our standard stains include:
- Autumn Oak
- Cordovan
- Fruitwood
- Wheat
- Cherry
- Dark Oak
- Golden Hickory
- 80/20 (AWW Blend)
- Cinnamon
- Dark Walnut
- Mahogany
- Traditional Cherry

Can I Order Unfinished Oak Interior Doors?
The short answer is yes, but your new doors will need to be finished, sanded, and sealed once they are on site. Sealing consists of priming and painting or staining and varnishing, sometimes with multiple coats. Remember, wood is a living product, and will expand and contract based on the humidity of its surroundings. Finishing the doors properly will minimize this, and must be done in a timely manner.
Do You Have Prehung Prefinished Oak Interior Doors?
Yes, but not the way that you think. Allegheny Wood Works offers prehung, prefinished oak interior doors. Prehung doors, simply put, make life much easier for you. Our doors and jambs come prepared for hinges and a knob, but do not come pre-assembled, as in the case with big-box stores. Since Allegheny Wood Works’ doors are solid wood, they are much too heavy to move around and ship if they were pre-assembled. Simply install the jambs into the rough opening, then hang the doors in the jambs with your new hinges. Jambs need to be installed plumb and square, and anchored into the studs. Allegheny Wood Works offers Quick Door Hanger kits for sale to make this process even easier.
At your request, our doors also come prefinished, saving you the added time and effort that would go into finishing it yourself. You will not need to sand, undercoat, wax, varnish, or paint it yourself – simply install your door once you receive it, and you’re good to go.
